Forming a Gun Trust offers several benefits to NFA firearm owners. By far the two most common benefits are as follows. First, it is much easier to do a transfer to a trust than it is to locate, visit and request the local CLEO to sign your ATF Form 3/4. Second, with a Trust, you can have several co-trustees that can lawfully access and use suppressors, sub machine guns, fully automatic/select fire rifles and short-barreled shotguns.
The first benefit simply saves you the time of not having to go in front of the the CLEO every time you want to purchase or transfer an NFA firearm.
The second, is where the largest benefit is seen from having a Gun Trust. The NFA prohibits any transfer of an NFA classified firearm without proper documentation and doing so is a violation of the black letter of the law. With a registered Gun Trust, all of the named co-trustees would be allowed to possess and use the firearms and not have to worry about an unauthorized transfer taking place.
